Houston Freelance reporter Nushin Huq

I’m an award-winning freelance journalist, specializing in energy, the environment, and the affordable housing industry.  My stories have appeared in publications such as Fortune, Bloomberg, and Texas Climate News.

I enjoy writing profile pieces as well as stories that explain a complex issue through the people and communities that are affected. I believe that the best way to explain a complex issue or answer the “why should we care” question is through the stories of the people involved. My story for National Catholic Reporter about heat islands in Houston won honorable mention for best reporting of social justice issues by the Catholic Press Association.

I’ve covered state and federal regulation of the power, gas and oil industry, as well as the power markets. As a former state correspondent for Bloomberg Industry Group, I have experience covering the Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi legislatures and state regulatory agencies and courts. Through those experiences, I learned the ins and outs of how bills become laws, how commodities are traded, a lot of acronyms, and an appreciation for stories that both educate and engage readers. I’ve written for a variety of audiences, from industry folk reading trade publications to the average newspaper reader.

In my free time, you can find me outdoors either hiking or gardening. Through my outdoor and travel pieces, I strive to make the outdoors more accessible to everyone- such as my piece on accessible camping for the Utah Board of Tourism or a stereotype crushing article on a Girl Scout backpacking group in Houston.
